The Voice and Resilience of Syrian Independent Media in 10 years of Conflict

In the framework of the V Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” on 29-30 March 2021, organised by the European Union, the European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is co-organising an online event together with Free Press Unlimited and International Media Support (IMS) focused on independent media. 





Almost ten years of conflict have left Syrians worn out, divided, censored and scattered inside and outside the country. In the midst of the conflict, Syrian independent media has remained a significant driver of change bringing reliable information, free expression and accountability to Syria. The European Endowment for Democracy (EED), the International Media Support (IMS) and Free Press Unlimited have all mobilised support to help ensure that independent and/or public service-oriented media become professional and resilient. 





During this session, key actors from Syrian independent media will discuss their past experience s and challenges, their role and impact , and they will relate their perspectives on the future. 

In this online discussion, the speakers will focus on the potential for independent media to shape the future of Syrian society by providing access to credible information, enabling public debate and combating hate speech, fake news, and polarisation. 




The panel will include: 

Aida Al-Kaisy , research and media reform advisor, will moderate the discussion 

Jawad Sharbaji, Editor-in-Chief at Enab Baladi newspaper 

Lina Chawaf, Executive Manager at Rozana FM 

Shiar Youssef, Programme Manager at Arta for Media and Development 




The event will be hosted on Zoom . 

The event will be held in English and Arabic . Interpretation in both languages will be provided.

ف ي إطار مؤتمر بروكسل الخامس حول " دعم مستقبل سوريا والمنطقة " الواقع في ۲۹ و ۳۰ آذار ۲۰۲۱ ، المنظم من قبل الاتحاد الأوروبي’’ ، تساهم المؤسسة الأوروبية من أجل الديمقراطية بالتشارك مع منظمتي اﻟﺼﺤﺎﻓﺔ اﻟﺤﺮة ﻏﻴﺮ اﻟﻤﺤﺪودة و دعم الإعلام الدولي في تنظيم حدث الكتروني يتم حور حول الإعلام المستقل . 

خلّف مايقارب عشر سنوات من الصراع انهماك وانقسام و رقابة وتشتت للسوريين داخل وخارج البلاد . إلا وأنه في خضم الصراع ، ظلت وسائل الإعلام السورية المستقلة محركًا أساسيًا للتغيير ، من خلال تقديمها المعلومات الموثوقة وإتيانها بحرية التعبير والمساءلة إلى سوريا . بهذا الصدد، قامت كل من المؤسسة الأوروبية من أجل الديمقراطية و منظمتي اﻟﺼﺤﺎﻓﺔ اﻟﺤﺮة ﻏﻴﺮ اﻟﻤﺤﺪودة و دعم الإعلام الدولي بتعبئة الدعم للمساعدة في أن تصبح وسائل الإعلام المستقلة و / أو الموجهة نحو الخدمة العامة محترفة ومرنة . 

خلال هذه الجلسة ، ستناقش الجهات الفاعلة الرئيسية من وسائل الإعلام السورية المستقلة تجاربها وتحدياتها السابقة ، ودورها وتأثيرها ، بالإضافة إلى منظورها للمستقبل . 

خلال هذه المناقشة، سيركز المتحدثون على إمكانية قيام وسائل الإعلام المستقلة ب صياغة مستقبل المجتمع السوري عبر توفير الوصول إلى معلومات موثوقة ، وتمكين النقاش العام ومكافحة خطاب الكراهية والأخبار المزيفة والا نقسام .
