Dear FoME colleagues,
I would like to share with you our latest report Media Viability in Lebanon<https://www.dw.com/en/foreign-fundinghypercompetition-new-insights-into-challenges-for-media-viability-in-lebanon/a-58165420https:/www.dw.com/en/foreign-fundinghypercompetition-new-insights-into-challenges-for-media-viability-in-lebanon/a-58165420>.
Based on interviews with Lebanese media experts as well as desktop research on general economic data, the author Ann Hollifield highlights to what extent the Lebanese media sector is able to produce high quality, independent journalism in a financially stable way. It is the first report which comprehensively analyses the conditions for media viability in a country using DW Akademie's Media Viability Indicators<https://www.dw.com/en/media-viability-new-indicators-show-what-is-at-stake/a-47874028> (MVIs).
What becomes clear is that being located at the nexus of geopolitical interests in the Middle East, Lebanon's media face specific systemic challenges. While there is a very high level of professionalism as well as a sophisticated technological infrastructure and digital expertise, foreign funding with political interests and hyper-competition make it difficult for independent public interest media to thrive.
You can find an interview with the author, Ann Hollifield and with Roula Mikhael, Executive Director of the Maharat Foundation, Lebanon here<https://www.dw.com/en/foreign-fundinghypercompetition-new-insights-into-challenges-for-media-viability-in-lebanon/a-58165420https:/www.dw.com/en/foreign-fundinghypercompetition-new-insights-into-challenges-for-media-viability-in-lebanon/a-58165420>. They discuss the findings and recommendations for media development actors in today's Lebanon. The complete report, including a chapter from the practitioner's perspective written by Jan Lublinski and Laura Moore, can be found here<https://www.dw.com/en/first-ever-media-viability-assessment-of-lebanon/a-58101358>.
The findings and recommendations are aimed to inform future media development interventions in the country. We hope that it will be useful for your work and look forward to any feedback you might have.
Best
Nadine
