The Center for International Media Assistance is pleased to release

A Regional Approach to
Media Development in West Africa





In response to the global crisis facing independent media, multi-stakeholder coalitions are emerging as a promising way to build strategies for survival. With diverse members brought together by a shared interest in protecting the information space, these coalitions can work across borders and institutional barriers, and at multiple levels from the local to the global.

CIMA's latest report, "A Regional Approach to Media Development in West Africa," highlights the potential of a growing coalition in West Africa. The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) led consultations with partners in 16 countries to formulate a strategy for a region-wide approach to media development that has since drawn the attention of the Economic Community of West African States. The report demonstrates that a collective vision is not only possible, but essential for protecting the region's hard-fought gains in media freedom. The report looks at the approach that MFWA has taken to organize its partner network and the steps they have taken to ensure that independent media, serving public interest, can continue to thrive.
