Dear FoME colleagues,
this week is an exciting week for Media and Information Literacy (MIL), a
topic that Deutsche Welle Akademie has been working on for several years
and is strategically committed to, with two international events running
concurrently. Both events (UNESCO and Mozilla Festival) bring together
academics, educators, international development specialists,
technologists, journalists and media professionals. MIL is a growing
domain focused on ensuring that citizens have the skills to access,
analyze, create, reflect and act responsibly on the information that they
consume. It arms citizens with the necessary knowledge and competencies to
access information, voice their opinions and actively participate in
community life.
Today, on Wednesday, UNESCO kicks off Global MIL Week (24-30 October) with
their Feature Conference (24-25) in Kaunas. This is the conference’s
eighth year and the theme is ‘Media and Information Literate Cities:
Voices, Powers and Change Makers’. DW Akademie is a supporting partner of
the event and if you are about please come to our side session ‘Hearts,
hubs and bridges in MIL: A profile of 5 globe-spanning MIL efforts’ on
Thursday at 9am or drop by our booth. We will be showcasing a new Media
and Information Literacy Expert Network (MILEN) that we support. MILEN is
an international network of 12 MIL practitioners who are committed to
sharing best practice and advocating on MIL.
Simultaneously Mozilla Festival of Action is running in London from 22nd
to 28th October. DW Akademie is bringing five international MIL experts
(all members of MILEN) to MisinfoCon on Wednesday 24th and MozFest Weekend
26-28. If you are around please come to our session ‘Breaking invisible
barriers: Are you working in MIL?’ in the Web Literacy space at 16:30 on
Saturday.
DW Akademie is using the week to provide the MILEN members with a
prominent space to share their ideas, discuss the mission, vision and
values of the network and to map current needs and expectations from the
MIL community. MILEN aims to not only raise awareness about MIL and share
experiences and good practice, but also to provide guidance and support to
MIL practitioners globally. You can find out more about MILEN and MIL Week
2018 here:

I wish you all a good week,
