BBC Media Action is BBC’s international development charity and we now recruiting for an exciting Research Manager position based in Juba, South Sudan for a 12 month period.  
 
For this role will need you to live and work in Juba and work with local researchers, deliver a portfolio of research in South Sudan to inform BBC Media Actions productions on behaviour change, meet donor requirements, and inform communications for development sector. You’ll lead or support the development of research plans, research instruments and sampling design, commissioning of agencies for qualitative and quantitative research, qualitative and quantitative analysis and interpretation, reporting and dissemination of research findings on time, to a budget and to high quality. This position will also expect you to plan and monitor resource needs, create and maintain work plans, and develop new business by leading on research contributions to project and programme proposals. You will be required to disseminate research findings and investigate new funding opportunities with external and internal stakeholders, along with line managing at least three South Sudanese researchers, and support their personal development, motivation and technical support. You’ll recruit, train and supervise teams of freelance data collectors in fieldwork locations outside of Juba and also engage proactively and collaboratively with non-research staff in the Juba office (including the Country Director, and creative, production and finance teams) to support the development and use of research in the production of BBC Media Action’s creative outputs.
 
You will work closely with London staff and with other BBC Media Action Research & Learning team staff to develop best practices in research and research management. The role will report to the Country Director of South Sudan, with a technical (“dotted line”) relationship to the Research and Learning team in London.
 
The Ideal Candidate
 
This position will require you to have strong qualitative and quantitative research knowledge, skills and experience and experience of managing fieldwork and appropriately adapting methods in challenging and resource-constrained conditions. You will also have experience of designing and managing mixed methods research in support of practical outcomes. You will need to have strong quantitative data analysis using SPSS or similar software, including multivariate and segmentation or clustering techniques, coupled with strong qualitative data analysis, including use of qualitative analysis software (ideally Atlas.ti). This role will expect you to have experience of (or demonstrate) the ability to develop innovative research designs (i.e. beyond impact surveys, FGDs, & IDIs) and have experience of planning and coordinating research and analysis with multi-disciplinary teams. You will also have project management skills, including planning, budget and resource management, along with the ability to communicate technical concepts to colleagues whose first language is not English. You need to have the resilience and flexibility to be living and working in a challenging and insecure environment. You will have excellent written and spoken English.
