Brown Bag Lecture and discussion
Marginality, mobility, communication: Case studies from the Sahel
Region By Dr Mirjam de Bruijn
 on 1 March 2017
 12:00–13:00 hrs
 at BICC, Pfarrer-Byns-Str. 1, 53121 Bonn
Mirjam de Bruijn will talk about marginality (social and economic
exclusion), mobility, and communication referring to cases from her
recent fieldwork in Chad. The lecture will reflect examples from the
research programme ‘Mobile Africa Revisited’, a comparative study of the
interrelationship between Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs), agency, marginality and mobility patterns in Africa and the
study ‘Connecting in times of duress: Understanding communication and
conflict in Middle Africa’s mobile margins’. She will particularly refer
to urban youth and artists and their role in political movements.
Mirjam de Bruijn is Professor of Contemporary History and Anthropology
of Africa at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. She is an
anthropologist whose work has a clear interdisciplinary character with a
preference for contemporary history and cultural studies and a focus on
West- and Central Africa. She is interested in the interrelationship
between agency, marginality, mobility, communication and technology. She
has been and is still doing extensive (qualitative) fieldwork in
Cameroon, Chad and Mali.
The talk on 1 March 2017 is organized in BICC’s Brown Bag Lecture
Series “Displacement and Development” which aims to interlink conflict
and displacement studies on the one hand and development respectively
humanitarian aid-oriented analyses on the other.
