Threats to journalists and violations of media freedom in Europe are on the increase. They include the wholesale prosecution of journalists in Turkey, frequent attacks on media workers in Hungary, Poland and Ukraine, accreditations withdrawn at the G20 summit in Germany and daily harrassment through verbal abuse and hate speech.

ECPMF’s one-day conference “Defending journalists under threat” is looking at practical solutions to tackle the many threats journalists are facing today. We meet to discuss legal support to whistleblowers and their journalistic contacts, safe houses away from home for media workers under threat and the political measures needed to change the current situation.

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) unites journalists associations, publishing houses, academic institutions, trade unions and media rights experts to achieve the application of the European Charter on Freedom of the Press throughout Europe. Founded in 2015, it is about to be registered as European Cooperative Society and headquartered in Leipzig with  members/partners/supporters in 16 countries. The ECPMF provides news, analyses and tools on media freedom issues, coordinates its member organisations' activities and helps individual journalists under threat, for example through a residence programme and petitions.
