Media Map Shows Impact of Information
Dear Christian,
How do we know that media make a difference? We've looked at the numbers.
The Media Map Project
<http://e2ma.net/go/7381497769/208771197/230134518/1406122/goto:http://www.mediamapresource.org>,
a multi-faceted research collaboration between Internews and The World
Bank Institute, has made 25 data sets which collectively touch on every
country in the world and up to 30 years' worth of information available
to the public for download and analysis. Visualizations on the site
allow viewers to interact with and test the data in different ways.
For example:
*
Map the Numbers
<http://e2ma.net/go/7381497769/208771197/230134519/1406122/goto:http://www.mediamapresource.org/map-the-numbers/>
shows how country-by-country scores change over time for indices
like the Voice and Accountability score from the World Governance
Indicators, number of Internet Users per 100 people, and Donor
Spending on Communications. Countries' scores are compared to
regions of the world, to provide context.
*
Chart the Numbers
<http://e2ma.net/go/7381497769/208771197/230134520/1406122/goto:http://www.mediamapresource.org/chart-the-numbers/>
allows users to see trends within data, such as correlations between
a country's engagement with ICTs and its economic prosperity.
Charting GDP along with the CIRI measure of Freedom of Speech and
Press, for example, shows a positive correlation between the two.
* Graph the Numbers
<http://e2ma.net/go/7381497769/208771197/230134521/1406122/goto:http://www.mediamapresource.org/graph-the-numbers/>
presents unique data sets that show measurements unavailable
elsewhere. The Cash for News Coverage and Bribe Payers Indices, two
of the sets displayed, are one-time studies that present a rich
resource for researchers interested in understanding influence in
the media.
Additionally, all the data featured on the site is available for free
download

"We're thrilled to be able to offer this data to the public," said Tara
Susman-Peña, Director of Research for the Media Map Project at
Internews. "By seeking out and streamlining the data available, putting
it all in one place, and making it easy for anyone to draw comparisons
with the visualization tools, we hope to encourage and support greater
investigation into the role of information and media in governance and
in development around the world."
With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Media Map
Project aims to better understand the interrelations between media
development and outcomes in governance and economic development. The
Media Map Project is part of the Internews Center for Innovation and
Learning

Using the data made available on the site, Sanjukta Roy, Data Analyst,
has produced a study

that demonstrates that a healthy media sector has a positive impact on
the political stability in the sub-Saharan Africa region. In addition,
the project will make more than fifteen pieces of original research
