Quality and professionalism in journalism and the media is this year's
theme of Highway Africa. After ten years of looking into journalism in
"the information society", the most important African journalism event
turned 11. Does this maturity call for more professionalism in media
practice?

APC was on the ground in Grahamstown, South Africa, to participate in
the event. A small team reported on the state of African blogging and
the way in which Africa's upcoming generation of media movers and
shakers are using information and communication technologies (ICTs).

This year's Highway Africa lasted from September 10 to 12 and was
preceded by the second edition of the Digital Citizen Indaba, a
blogging-specific one-day gathering. More than 600 participants came
from East, West and Southern African countries to speak at
presentations, launch books and network. Some even walked away with an
award...

APC presented a national broadband internet study, talked about our
efforts to lower the price and increase access to internet in Africa and
held a workshop on digital storytelling. Enjoy this special edition of

La qualité et le professionnalisme en journalisme et dans les médias
étaient le thème de cette année à Highway Africa. Après dix ans à
s'intéresser au journalisme dans " la société de l'information ", le
plus important événement sur le journalisme en Afrique atteint ses onze
ans. Cet " âge avancé " fait-il appel à plus de professionnalisme dans
la pratique médiatique?

APC était sur le terrain à Grahamstown en Afrique du Sud pour participer
à l'événement. Une petite équipe a d'ailleurs couvert l'état du blogage
en Afrique, ainsi que la façon par laquelle la génération montante de
travailleurs des médias africains utilisent les technologies de
l'information et de la communication (TIC).

Highway Africa a eu lieu du 10 au 12 septembre cette année et fut
précédée de la seconde édition de Digital Citizen Indaba, une rencontre
d'une journée spécifiquement axée sur le blogage. Plus de 600
participants sont venus de l'Afrique de l'Est, de l'Ouest, puis du Sud
pour présenter, lancer un livre et/ou réseauter. Certains sont même
repartis avec un prix d'excellence...

APC a présenté une étude nationale sur la large bande internet, exposé
ses efforts destinés à baisser le prix et augmenter l'accès à l'internet
haute vitesse en Afrique et, tenu un atelier sur les récits numériques.

HIGHWAY AFRICA en français: Internet en RDC : " Ça nous prend 50 millions "

pays d'Afrique qui ne profite pas encore pleinement de l'explosion des
technologies internet. L'homme qui se propose de mettre tout en œuvre
afin que la RDC rattrape son retard était présent lors de la onzième
édition de la conférence Highway Africa afin de présenter les grandes
lignes d'une étude faisabilité qu'il a aidé à monter.

HIGHWAY AFRICA: Internet Forum - Continent to send 20 delegates

Remmy Nweke (Daily Champion, Nigeria) 13/09/2007 -- Civil Society
Organisations (CSOs) in Africa are to send a 20-member delegation to the
Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November
2007 to ensure that the African voices are heard. Speaking on behalf of
the CSOs, Natasha Primo of the Association for Progressive
Communications (APC) said that the essence of bringing the crusade to
the largest gathering of journalists on the continent was to guarantee
that African communicators were not left out.

HIGHWAY AFRICA: Looking for literature? Free software lit now easy to find

Frédéric Dubois (APC.org) 09/12/2007 -- Launched on September 11 by
Arnold Pietersen of the South African organisation CECS, the Free
knowledge for ICT Literacy portal will act as a guide for people who are
looking for "the best information available on and for ICT training".
Pietersen's enthusiastic launch took place at Rhodes University in
Grahamstown, South Africa, in front of a small but enthusiastic audience
attending the 2007 edition of the Highway Africa conference.

HIGHWAY AFRICA en français: Journalistes primés à Highway Africa

Frédéric Dubois et Hippolyte Djiwan (Blogue d'APC) 12/09/2007 -- Les
meilleurs journalistes et reporters TIC d'Afrique ont été récompensés le
mardi 11 septembre par Highway Africa. SABC, la radio et télédiffusion
publique sud-africain, principal commanditaire de la conférence Highway
Africa, a officiellement remis des prix pour souligner l'excellence
journalistique et l'utilisation novatrice des technologies de
l'information et de la communication par la génération montante.

Fazila Farouk (APC Blog) 12/09/2007 -- Ismail Farouk scooped the winning
prize in the "individual" category of the Highway Africa New Media Award
2007, for his website Soweto Uprisings - www.sowetouprisings.com, which
he describes as a "Google maps mash up".

journalisme dans la rue "

Noel Tadégnon (Mediatictogo) 12/09/2007 -- La téléphonie mobile connaît
une croissance phénoménale avec 2,5 milliards d'utilisateurs dans le
monde et 200 millions en Afrique, selon le Dr Peter Benjamin de l'ONG
Cell Life, basée en Afrique du Sud. Avec cette évolution de la
technologie mobile, tout le monde peut faire des reportages avec son
téléphone portable aux quatre coins du globe. Ce qui fait dire à Peter
Verweij, professeur à l'université d'Utrecht en Hollande que " la
technologie mobile ramène le journalisme dans la rue ".

ordinateur, pensez à une histoire qui vous touche et vous fait vibrer,
puis vous pondez un scénario. Un scénario de film, pour être précis.
Quelques heures plus tard, vous levez le regard sur votre écran. Puis
là, vous récoltez un bon petit film de votre cru... Enfin presque.

HIGHWAY AFRICA: Women in the African newsroom

Magazine was the chair of a discussion panel on gender and the media
today, September 11 2007, in Grahamstown, South Africa. Unlike most of
the other panels at Highway Africa, this one lined up three women and no
man. Certainly a rather critical one in an event where only 15 out of 55
speakers are women.

HIGHWAY AFRICA: African journalists refuse to be taken for granted

power. This is the underlying mood of many of the 600-plus African
journalists - comprising the biggest gathering of African journalists on

DIGITAL CITIZEN INDABA: Journalists will not blog until they receive
feedback

Al Jazeera and Vincent Maher from South Africa's Mail & Guardian argue
that the adoption by mainstream media of "social media" is what will
reload citizen journalism. This is the note on which the Digital Citizen

DIGITAL CITIZEN INDABA: Challenges of content within the blogosphere in
Africa

Arthur Chatora (thoughtleader.co.za, South Africa) 10/09/2007 -- The
issue of content production and representativeness is important within
African news production. In her presentation at the 2007 Digital Citizen
Indaba conference in Grahamstown on Sunday, the chairperson of LinuxChix
in South Africa, Anna Badimo, highlighted the need for new approaches in
African news production. APC Africa-Women coordinator Sylvie Niombo
explained that content in the mainstream media ignores lived realities
of women.
