hmm, dependency hell... 

If you use the latest version of cabal-install, you can use sandboxes to
separate the arbtt build from your usual setup, or so I heard.

Alternatively, what distribution are you using? I could provide debian
binary packages.

PS: Your problems motivated me to set up a travis instance for arbtt:
https://travis-ci.org/nomeata/darcs-mirror-arbtt
Arbtt compiles on 7.4.1 and newer.
